办事员会替旅客填写“行李意外报告”，内容包括飞行路程、携带行李件数，并会拿出各式行李的图片供旅客指认，并将资料输入电脑，通过国际性协寻行李网路，找出行李遗失处的站名。若超过21天还未找回，则由末站的航空公司负责理赔。即根据航空公司的“终站赔偿法则”，多次转机的旅客丢失行李，由其搭乘至终站的航空公司负责理赔。
赔偿的额度：
根据国际航空协会规定，托运行李之赔偿限额约为每磅行李赔偿9美元7美分，随身行李的赔偿限额为每位旅客400美元。
预防措施：
若使用新的行李箱，则要记住行李箱的特征、颜色及尺寸，否则领取行李时，就可能会茫茫然不知如何找起。另外，行李上务必写上英文名字、住处地址，这样就比较容易在机场被寻获。各航空公司一般都会提供行李名条供乘客写上联络地址及电话，一旦找到乘客丢失的行李，航空公司可按名条上的信息，将行李送回。若是易碎品，最好放在比较妥当的地方或者干脆不要放在行李箱内，因为有些航空公司对于易损、贵重或易腐物品，概不负赔偿责任。
